Boxer Health Problems
Hi everyone,
I’ve set this website up to help all those people who own a dog and want to find out how to prevent or deal with
any behaviour problems or health problems you and your dog may be having trouble with.
There is a particular emphasis on Boxers however the principles will be the same for any dog
breed.
What Are The Common Boxer Health
Problems?
Boxers are a unique breed that have been around for many years. One of the potential problems of established
pure breeds is the potential to ‘line breed’ which is when dogs that are distantly related are mated, which can
then result in health problems later on.

Some common Boxer health problems are as follows:
Obesity
Obesity is a very common Boxer health problem and like humans it is a result of a poor diet and not enough
exercise. Although obesity as a condition on its own, rarely causes any specific heath issues it can be a
precursor to many other serious disease such as heart failure, tumours, liver disease, which if left untreated can
be fatal. It is very easy to treat obesity, just put your Boxer on a diet and up the exercise!
Diabetes
As a follow on, obesity is a potential risk factor for your Boxer to developing diabetes. Diabetes in dogs is
very similar to diabetes seen in humans, in which there becomes an issue with the pancreas due to a diet rich in
fat and sugar. If you keep your Boxer on a healthy diet and keep an excess weight to a minimum you can help prevent
the onset of this disease.
Common symptoms of diabetes can be excessive drinking and urinating, as well as constant hunger, so if you are
worried about your Boxer you should take them to the vet to get examined. The good news is, if your Boxer is
diagnosed with diabetes it is a very manageable condition.
Arthritis and Dysplasia
This is a very common Boxer health problem that aldo affects many different dog breeds. It appears to be quite
common in pure bred large breed dogs of which Boxers can fall into that category. In order to help prevent the
onset of this condition you should try and avoid obesity in your Boxer, and take them to the vet each year for
regular checkups.
Allergies
Dogs can suffer from many different allergies and Boxers are no different. Allergies cause your Boxer to scratch
excessively which can then lead to infections of the skin.
Another common symptom of allergies can be recurrent ear infections. You should ensure you regularly treat your
Boxer for fleas and if you notice any parts of their skin start to look infected you should contact your local
vet.
By regularly exercising your Boxer, keeping them well groomed and feeding them a high quality diet you can
prevent a lot of these common issues from occurring or getting out of hand. Remember prevention is ALWAYS better
than a cure!
